In its care units, U2nc offers patients all dialysis techniques according to their profile, state of health and degree of autonomy. Our health company also intervenes upstream of dialysis by providing nephrology consultations in Nouméa, Koné, Bourail and La Foa. In addition, we are involved in the New Caledonia kidney transplant program by preparing patients to use this treatment.
To achieve its mission effectively, U2nc relies on state–of–the–art equipment (state–of-the–art dialysis and water treatment generators, Doppler ultrasound, etc.). We also have a pharmacy for internal use which allows us to control the corresponding supply chain.
U2nc has a long history of working with peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, placing catheters and carrying out follow–up consultations, including for patients at home.
At the beginning of 2022, we opened our own peritoneal dialysis unit at the Kuindo-Magnin Clinic. This technique is well received in New Caledonia. Indeed, gentler than hemodialysis – due to the absence of vascular access – it avoids contact with the blood, which patients of Oceanian culture appreciate. But above all, peritoneal dialysis allows patients to preserve their daily activities.
U2nc performs day hemodialysis in all its care units, in Nouméa (Kuindo–Magnin clinic and Médisud building), Koné, Bourail and La Foa, using two techniques:
Since the end of 2020, U2nc has also been offering long night dialysis in some of its units. A great step forward for the patient‘s quality of life!
In dialysis patients, the risk of lower limb wounds leading to amputation is increased. Indeed, these wounds do not heal, due to disorders of the microcirculation of the blood (arterial disease of the lower limbs, calciphylaxis, etc.).
U2nc has decided to prevent this risk: in this public health project, all our professions are called upon, from doctors to our Quality unit. First, our nurses monitor the patients‘ feet, to trigger the necessary care, if necessary.
To obtain convincing results, U2nc has been practicing rheophresis since the beginning of 2025. This technique consists of double filtering patients‘ plasma to purify it of inflammatory molecules that make their blood viscous (fibrinogen, lipoproteins, etc.). It improves the fluidity of the blood, and therefore its circulation, to reduce vascular disorders, offering an additional treatment for refractory arterial disease of dialysis.
U2nc performs surgery for nephrological and diagnostic purpose as well as functional explorations:
U2nc hospitalizes patients for clinical nephrology, nephropathy assessments, complications on dialysis or transplanted people.
We perform, in day hospitalization, ambulatory care and nephrological functional explorations.
U2nc offers medical consultations to patients with renal insufficiency, dialysis, kidney transplants, or to patients suffering from various kidney damage (diseases specific to the kidney, metabolic, immune, etc.).
To closely monitor patients in peripheral units far from Nouméa, U2nc has developed remote consultation (teleconsultation), according to a very rigorous health protocol. Its physicians carry it out using the patient’s nephrology medical file common to all New Caledonian institutions that provide nephrological care. U2nc contacts patients by phone or video and then sends treatment prescriptions by e-mail, as well as to pharmacies.
U2nc offers patients with chronic kidney failure all the techniques of renal replacement. This is why we deploy a pre–transplant coordination unit, whose role is:
– to inform patients about the modalities of kidney transplantation, its advantages and disadvantages;
– to accompany them, when their medical check–up allows it, towards this therapeutic option which spares them dialysis.
“We have a strong desire to offer all patients who can access to a kidney transplant from a deceased or living donor“, says Dr. Caroline Mesguen, nephrologist in charge of leading our unit. “The transplant is carried out in Noumea or in France. Our team intervenes upstream, to compile patient files and give them every chance of succeeding, by adapting to their profile and their expectations.”
U2nc has a pre–transplant coordination referent nurse. She is responsible for creating a relationship of trust with patients and supporting them in their journey. Initially, she interviewed them to gauge their motivations and knowledge of transplantation. Together they identify a potential donor in their entourage. Then, our nephrologist explains the pre–transplant process to them, such as the benefits and risks of transplantation.
Medical examinations complete this assessment, at the end of which the doctor will decide whether or not to register the patients on the national waiting list for kidney transplants. The patient who is a candidate and compatible with the transplant is referred to our partner, the CHT Gaston Bourret, the only one authorized to perform it in New Caledonia, from the kidneys of living and deceased donors.
In 2023, 5 U2nc patients successfully benefited from kidney transplantation, some thanks to a living donor. We have set ourselves the goal of 10 transplant patients per year.
